Today we had a tour of Mount Vernon. We had an awesome guide who showed us all around the grounds before we toured inside. There was lots of history to this place and something like 60-70% of the furnishings inside are actual original belongings of the family and the rest is donated period pieces...pretty neat. We were not allowed to photograph inside of course...but it was neat to see how it probably looked back then.
front view
not so great family pic...guess I decided not to suck in...ugh!
back of the house
this was like a 3-D wall art...his eyes would follow you as you walked around. This is in their education center there...that was a neat place too...full of historical information.
The view of the Potomac from Washington's back door. They said he planted short-growing trees so that he'd always have this view. Cool.
Sydney as the Washington's daughter Patsy Custis. Martha's from a previous marriage. They never did have children together.
Josh and the other guy got chosen to place the wreath at their tomb. Not so special when it's done several times per day I'm sure. :)
Sydney and the souvenier shopping...here's what she came home with this day...and that's only cuz she was out of money and couldn't afford the doll she wanted. We were mean parents...but she ended up happy with her cherry sour axe (it had cherry sour candy inside it).
Afterward we still had time to go into town and we decided to visit the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. It was pretty cool too. We enjoyed the animal exibits and dinosaurs. They also have some sections on different cultures which were cool to explore. Sydney lit up at the museums. She was hard to keep track of too...I was a bit worried about losing her...it was way crowded and she would disappear on us...but always would be found with a quick "SYDNEY PAIGE!"
Sydney is almost as big as an elephant's leg.
David liked looking at all the animal displays too.
I had NEVER seen a dinosaur or skeleton like this one...it's a giant sloth. WEIRD!
